Each column is a slice of the price range, and its height is how many cars are advertised in that slice. A tall column means plenty of choice at that price.
The black marker is the average. When the columns lean to the left and the marker sits to their right, a small number of expensive cars are pulling the average up — so the busiest price is the more useful number to shop against.
The striped columns at each end are ads priced well outside the normal range — a damaged car, a deposit-only listing, a collector's example. They are counted the same way as every other column, so you can see how few of them there are, but they are left out of the average. An end column covers everything past its label, not just the slice next to it.
The columns count ads seen in the last 30 days across the sites we track. The average price is a current figure, taken from the last few days, so it follows the market more closely than the columns do.
Each point is a whole calendar month, not a day. An advert counts in every month it was on the market, at the price it was actually advertised at during that month — so a car listed for six months is counted six times, once per month, and not weighted by how long it sat there.
Only the average and the band are shown to begin with. Click or tap any name beneath the chart to add or remove a series.
The size of each point on the line shows how many adverts that month's average was calculated from, so a month built on a handful of cars is not mistaken for one built on hundreds. Where a month has very few adverts the point is drawn hollow and the line through it goes pale and finely dashed.
We show those months rather than hiding them. A quiet month is real information, and filling the gap with an estimate would put a price on the chart that no car was ever advertised at. Treat a hollow point as indicative and read the trend either side of it.
The last point is the month we are currently in, so it is only as complete as today's date and it will keep moving. It is drawn with a dashed line for that reason.
The line and the columns do not measure the same sort of thing, which is why they have separate scales — the line's on the left, the columns' on the right.
Taller blue than orange means more cars are coming up for sale than leaving, and the line will tend to rise. Taller orange than blue means the model is selling through faster than it is being restocked. Both columns being tall while the line stays flat means brisk turnover — plenty of movement, steady choice.
The last month is the one we are currently in, so it is only as complete as today's date and its columns are drawn pale. “Stopped appearing” is the most understated of the three: an advert has to be missing for a while before we treat it as gone, so the newest month always looks quieter than it will turn out to be.
